Lava in a cup

Lava in a Cup
We had fun doing some science experiments, learning about change of state.
In this experiment we used:
water
oil
food colouring
salt

When we put the water and oil in the jar the oil floated on top of the water.  They didn't mix.  We added food colouring so that it looked like lava.  Everyone had turns putting some salt in and it sank to the bottom of the jar.  Then small lumps of salt floated back up to the top and it looked like bubbling reddish lumps of lava.

  7. We think both of the groups did a good job. It was similar but different too. We liked watching the salt slowly drifting down to the bottom. It looked like piles and piles of snow. On the second one we like how the water fizzed up when the tablet went in.

  14. Wow, that looks like a really fun experiment!
I am very keen to try this with my classroom at Frankton School. I wonder why it bubbles when you add in the salt?
