Germinating beans in a ziplock bag

Germinating beans

When you grow seeds in the ground, you can't see exactly what happens.

Room 8 are germinating bean seeds in a ziplock bag with just a wet cotton wool ball or a wet paper towel.

We have stuck the bag to the window because we know the seeds need warmth.

We wondered whether it would make a difference to how fast the beans grew if they were on a north or south facing window...?

We also wondered whether it made a difference how much water was in the bag, or whether we used a paper towel or cotton wool ball...?

Here are a few pictures of the beans in the bags,

You can see that this bean has started to grow, north facing with a paper towel.

These beans are also doing really well.

We will keep you posted on their progress.

We are also keeping a log sheet with our observations, measurements and sketches of the bean's growth.

Come and have a look at our log sheets in our inquiry books if you are interested.

School garden

We went to the Hamilton East School garden to have a look at what is there and decide where we should plant our vegetables.

We noticed that there needs to be quite a lot of weeding and preparing before we can plant anything. We chose an area and marked it off with some sticks.

We had a big discussion about what we would like to plant in the garden.

Although there were some great suggestions like grapes, watermelons and feijoa trees, we realised we need plants that will grow over the next few months, and that can be planted at this time of year.

We discovered that on the back of a seed packet, it tells you what season you can plant the seeds, depending on where you live!

It also tells you how long it will take for them to germinate and how long till harvesting time.

We then did our own research into the plants we are interested in, there are a couple of links to the left if you are interested.

We made a table in our google drive accounts and put the information in.

Below are some pictures of our first trip to the garden. We also did some sketches of how we would like the garden to look.

Cricket skills

Cricket skills session

We were really lucky to have another cricket skills session with Sport Waikato.

We focussed on catching and batting skills. One of the the most challenging parts was throwing the cricket ball in the air and clapping more than 12 times before we caught it again. Try it! It's not as easy as it sounds!

Here we are running after the balls that the teacher hit.

This is the tricky part, especially if we haven't thrown straight up in the air. This means trying to watch the ball, clap and run in the right direction...all without bumping into anyone.

We were then so lucky to get given a bag with some activities, sunglasses and a cricket ball to play with.

THANK YOU!!!!
